Before we get into the water, we really need to get to know our propulsion device. We’ve already seen our paddle, but now we have to learn how to properly hold and use it. To properly grab your paddle, place your paddle on your right shoulder with one blade sticking out in front of you, power face down. (Notice the blade is curved. The concave side is called the power face.) Now place your hand on the right side of the shaft (as if you were getting ready for a karate chop.) Then place your fingers around the shaft. To get the correct position, your second set of knuckles should align with the spine of the blade. Also, your hand should be about 6 inches from the neck of the blade. Now, take some super glue and pour it all over your right hand…this hand doesn’t move! Now lift the paddle off your shoulder and grab it with your left hand (hey don’t move your right hand), the same distance from the neck of the other blade. Your left hand stays approximately in the same place, but it will rotate around the shaft of the paddle (this is called the “slip hand”)
You may notice that the paddle shaft has an oblong shape. This is to help you grip it properly. Note: paddles also come in different lengths, you will want to choose one that you can grip comfortably with your hands about 4-6 inches from the neck of each blade.
