Thanks

So, we tried something new this year to celebrate our 20th Annual event, and by all accounts, it was another great success. Thank you to Cindy and Erin for pushing me to try out a new venue and new take on the MS Poker Tournament. While it wasn't the usual private, small event, it was still a great time as we moved to the Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore. Thanks to all of our great players and donors, we once again raised over $2500 for the National MS Society. Having all of our great friends and donors, all in great cheer, just really makes this such a memorable and awesome event, we really can't tell you how much we appreciate the support and the opportunity to host this event every year.

While we plan to host our usual at home event in the future, we really think that we set the stage for more and BIGGER MS Poker Tournaments in the future, and will see what we can do to make this event a monster.  Thanks to everyone who came out for this first casino event and helped us prove out the concept and provide a great first impression for the sponsors and supporters.

Tournament Highlights and Results

On to the tournament summary and highlights. We started off spread out over 5 tables at the Horseshoe Casino. But after an hour or so, we consolidated down to four tables. Seats were assigned by the casino - so no one can blame me for their table assignments ;-). It was certainly nice having professional dealers and plenty of space. I hope everyone enjoyed their MS Poker Tournament swag bag and sweatshirts!

Laurie was excited that she actually got to play this year - based on the results, maybe she should play every year, and I should deal!

Sorry Dan, the casino won't let us play SOHE.

One of the hallmarks of the event were some of the crazy hands that we saw throughout the day. You were definitely not out of it until you saw the river! Here were two of the craziest moments below.

Here, Steve takes the brunt of a bad beat - as his three sixes on the flop get overtaken on the River - by the Peach's pocket eights. (Dan is not impressed (or surprised) ;-)

The biggest roller coaster of the ride happened early in the day as three fours on the flop, fell far behind on the Turn to three Queens - only to re-emerge as four of a kind on the River, beating the full house of Queens over Fours.  Why can't I have that kind of luck?

Final Table and Results

Final Table

We had a nice and lengthy elimination period for the tournament, but eventually we settled down to our final 9 players. This year, the final table featured a large female contingent (5 ladies vs. 4 men). Our returning champion, Learie, had a decent stack - and we had two other previous MS Poker Champions (Dee and Cindy) looking to add to their trophy case.  We even had two Horseshoe Casino locals that were looking to take home the trophy and first place prize.

It was quite a battle, as the small stacks refused to go away quietly. Laurie and Scott used their patience and persistence to win 5th place and 4th place cash prizes. This left us with the final three:  featuring our returning champion, Learie, local pro, Karen, and our favorite luck box (jk) Antonio. A crowd gathered to cheer on the MS Poker regulars and keep the trophy in familiar hands.

Final 3

Learie helped assure that the trophy would go home with our group by taking down a HUGE pot with his pocket Queens - crippling Karen and setting up a showdown with Antonio.  Learie and Antonio were not going to step off the gas as there were large pots, followed by larger pots. The chip lead started in favor of Learie and stayed that way for a while, but Antonio would not be denied and fought his way back several times, eventually taking the chip lead which he would not relinquish.
